The Urban Chapter, connected with the University of the City of New York, was established, as were the first five Chapters of the Fraternity, through the efforts of graduate members of the Hamilton Chapter or undergraduates who had left that college for other institutions. In the case of Urban, Daniel Huntington, HAM 1836, who on Christmas Eve, 1835, under power conferred upon him by the Mother Chapter, initiated Arthur Cleveland Coxe, a student in the University, afterwards the distinguished Episcopal Bishop of Western New York. These two men then formally established the new Chapter and others speedily added to the number. At first the organization was known as the “Red Ribbon,” to distinguish its members from the “White Ribbon”, of Columbia; but, in 1836, the name “Urban Chapter” was adopted. John Jay and John Henry Hobart were initiated for the purpose of enabling them to found a Chapter in Columbia College, in which endeavor they succeeded. Similarly, in accordance with the then existing law, three students in “Nassau Hall College,” Princeton, New Jersey were initiated with the intention of perpetuating the Fraternity in that institution; but this purpose was not now carried out for reasons not known, as all three have died. The Urban Chapter also assisted in the establishment of Chapters at Yale, Harvard, and Brown Universities. In 1839, the Chapter voluntarily surrendered the Charter.
