The Northwestern Chapter was established on October 20, 1939 when a local chapter at Northwestern, the Wranglers, was initiated in Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity.
The Wranglers were founded on May 20, 1903 by eight Northwestern undergraduates dedicated to the ideals of scholarship and campus achievement. The Fraternity flourished quickly as its members gained campus acclaim in varsity athletics, scholarship and campus leadership positions.
In 1915, the Wranglers built and occupied a Chapter house on Northwestern’s campus to house its members. This facility, remodeled and expanded in 1960 to house 43 men, was the central focus of the Chapter.
During the late 1930’s, after competing for over thirty years with national fraternities which had representatives on campus, the Wranglers decided to search for a national fraternity to affiliate with whose ideals and goals were consistent with their own. After much effort, the Wranglers, both undergraduate members and the Board of Trustees of the alumni group, determined that Alpha Delta Phi best suited this objective and petitioned the Executive Council of Alpha Delta Phi for a Charter on July 25, 1938.
Unfortunately, due to alumni pressure from their own alumni, the Northwestern Chapter decided to separate from the Fraternity. The Charter was suspended in 1992.
