When the University of Buffalo, originally private, became part of the State University of New York in 1962, it fell under a ban on national fraternities existing throughout the SUNY system. In 1977, however, the ban was lifted; and fraternities began their comeback at UB.

In the fall of 1980, a number of students at UB, dissatisfied with the ten fraternities that had recolonized the University, visited the University of Rochester to explore the prospects among the fraternities there. They discovered the Alpha Delta Phi; and found that they offered the virtues that all fraternities should be built upon, but often were not. Upon approaching the men of the Rochester Chapter for their help in establishing a Chapter at Buffalo, they were referred to the International. James T. McCollum, Ill 1956, a member of the Board of Governors, met with 35 students who the leaders had brought together for this purpose. The following fall in 1981 5 members of this group were initiated into the mysteries of the Alpha Delta Phi under the auspices of the Rochester Chapter.

As their founders pursued their quest for a Chapter at Buffalo, they expanded their numbers and influence at UB to the point where they had garnered most of the important student leadership positions on campus. With the continued aid and encouragement of the International, Brother McCollum, and other Buffalo area alumni from other Chapters, their efforts were rewarded in August 1985, when the Board of Governors granted the group their charter.

Unfortunately, the Chapter wasn’t able to sustain the membership it had gained through the early years and the Chapter became inactive in 1999.
