The Hudson Chapter
Case Western Reserve University
1841-1964

,

Samuel Eells, the founder of the Fraternity, and Joseph Fewsmith, Y 1840, then a tutor at Western Reserve, founded the Hudson Chapter on July 1, 1841, at the Western Reserve College in Hudson, Ohio. Brother Eells was then in the last year of his life, in failing health; and his coming to Hudson to take the leading part in establishing a Chapter there must have been felt by him to be probably the last service he should be able to render to the Fraternity he so loved well. That the countenance of the faculty of the College was not lacking is shown by the election to membership of two professors at the second meeting of the Chapter, and of two more shortly after. No secret fraternity had existed at the College before the establishment of the Hudson Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi.

In 1882 the name of the College was changed to “Adelbert College of Western Reserve University”, and it was removed to Cleveland, Ohio.

For fifteen years following the removal to Cleveland, the Chapter had its room in the Cobb and Bradley Block on Euclid, Avenue. In 1897, it leased a house on Fairchild Street, near the college grounds. In 1915 the Cleveland Alpha Delta Phi Corporation with the aid of other members of the Fraternity, purchased a house on Cornell Road. The Chapter remained here until the fall of 1935 when they moved to a house on Mayfield Road, a few blocks from the campus.

The Hudson Chapter became inactive in June 1943 as World War II called its membership to the colors. Returning from the service, the members, with the assistance of the Alumni, reactivated the Chapter in 1947. In 1948 the alumni organization changed its title to the Hudson Association and purchased a Chapter House at 1665 East 117th Street.

In 1955 the Chapter moved to a house on Fellflower Road, nearer to the campus, and remained there until it became inactive in 1963. The end came when it was decided that the university was not sufficiently in sympathy with the fraternity system.
