The Board of Governors

The Convention also elects the Board of Governors. There are twelve Alumni Governors, elected for three year terms and three Student Governors, elected for two year terms.  The terms of the Alumni Governors are staggered to provide continuity as are the terms of the Student Governors.  There are other restrictions on who may be elected to assure that no region or chapter may dominate the Board.

The Board of Governors generally holds four regular meetings each year. One of these is at the Convention; others are held at various chapter houses in the fall, winter and spring.

The Governors elect the President, Vice President, and treasurer of the Fraternity from among themselves. The President, with Board approval, appoints the Secretary and Assistant Treasurer, who may or may not be Governors. In addition to these officers, there is an undergraduate Assistant Secretary elected by the Convention.

This structure reflects the Constitution as amended on April 21, 1968. The Fraternity has not always been governed this way. During the 19th century as the Fraternity grew throughout the country, it became necessary to establish a central alumni organization to coordinate the activities of the undergraduate units. In 1879 a corporation was formed under a special act of the New York State legislature known as "The Executive Council of the Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity." This corporation was disbanded in 1968 with the adoption of a new Constitution by the 136th Convention.

In 1911, the office of Traveling Secretary was established. Since then, the position has ben re-named "Field Representative," though the basic duties and qualifications remain the same. The Field Representative is a recently graduated Alpha Delt employed to visit each of the various chapters, discuss chapter operations, suggest improvements and commend innovation. In the late 1990s the position was re-named "Chapter Services Coordinator" ("CSC"). With the recent expansion of chapters, the Fraternity determined that two full-time CSCs were required to provide the services chapters expect and, when necessary, assistance with operational or programming areas needing improvement. 

The Fraternity also employs an Executive Secretary who manages the International Office in Morton Grove, Illinois, and handles the daily administrative details of the Fraternity. The CSCs and Executive Secretary are the only salaried employees of the Alpha Delta Phi. All other officers receive only travel reimbursement.

Border Entry Requirements

 

U.S. citizens require a U.S. passport or another valid travel document to enter or re-enter the U.S.  U.S. citizens do not need a passport to cross into Canada (unless coming from a third country), but are required to have valid photo ID, proof of citizenship, and, if available, their Permanent Resident Card.  U.S. citizens can visit Canada without a visa for up to 180 days.

 

Legal Matters

 

The legal drinking age is 19 and licensed establishments are allowed to serve between 11:00 a.m. and 2 a.m.  Government issued photo ID is needed for those who appear to be under age 30.  Usually a driver’s license is sufficient.

 

Background Information about Toronto

 

Toronto is the capital of the Province of Ontario and sits on the north-western shore of Lake Ontario.  The population of the City of Toronto is 2.5 million. Including the surrounding area, which is called the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), the population is 5.6 million.

 

The currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD).  Many businesses in the downtown area will accept payment in U.S. Dollars, but the exchange rate will be less favourable than you would get at your own or a Canadian bank.  The most widely accepted credit cards are Visa and Master Card.  Debit cards are widely used in Canada.  Almost all establishments will take payment by credit or debit card.

 

All purchases will have a 13% sales tax added which is called the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST).  Gratuities are similar to the U.S. and 15 – 20% is the norm for good service at a restaurant or in a taxi.

 

Canada operates under the metric system, so temperatures are in Celius (C), distances are in kilometres and weights are in kilograms.  In August in Toronto the average high temperature will be around 26 C (79F) and the average low will be around 13C (55F).  In early August it is common for temperatures to be in the mid – high 80s F during the day.
